On November 5-6, 2012, The 8th PulseNet Asia Pacific Strategic Planning Meeting also called the 8th monitoring network for molecular typing of infectious disease conference was held in Shenzhen. Which organized by Department of Health, Hong Kong, hosted by National Institute for Communicable Discase Control and Prevention (CDC), China CDC, and state key laboratory for Infections Disease Prevention and Control (SKLID) and co-hosted by Shenzhen CDC, Guangdong PROVINCE,china. A total of 36 participants were the leaders or experts from the United States, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, India, Vietnam and China CDC, CDC of province or municipal level in China including Guangdong, Henan, Shandong, Anhui, Yunnan, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Hunan and Shenzhen. Zhang Dan, vice director of Health, Population and Family Planning Commission of Shenzhen and Lin Hancheng, director of disease control and prevention department attended the meeting.
The meeting was hosted by Kan biao, vice director of communicable disease prevention and control department of China CDC and Zhang Yonghui, director of Guangdong CDC, Zhang Dan, Zhang Dan, vice director of Health, Population and Family Planning Commission of Shenzhen highly praised the PulseNet set up by United States and the PulseNet advocated by Xu Jianguo, academician of China CDC which all play an important role in monitoring and early warning of bacterial infectious disease and foodborne diseases and hope that we can cooperate with the organization of monitoring network for molecular tying of infectious disease, cultivate laboratory experts in order to promote the ability of surveillance and early warning in terms of infectious disease in Guangdong, thus, can cope with the emergence of new infectious disease together.
Experts on behalf of their countries or regions made some speeches in the meeting, such as Peter Gerner-Smidt, professor of USCDC, Haruo Watanabe, president of the national institute of infectious diseases in Japan, Xu Jianguo, director of the department of infectious disease in China CDC and K.Km.Kam, consultant doctor of the department of health, Hong Kong.
PulseNet is a laboratory monitoring network based on the pathogenic molecular classification and comparison, which started to build by USCDC in 1996. Gore, vice president of US was announced the establishment at the White House in1998. At present, PulseNet has become the international monitoring network, its members are all over the world, such as Asia-Pacific area, Canada, Latin America, Europe and so on.
PulseNet aims to find out the related cases, facilitate the early detection of outbreaks and save lives. Also, PulseNet can cope with the emerging infectious disease and, ensure food safety and human health. Moreover, PulseNet can prompt the outbreaks that have not found or detected by epidemiology in advance, detect the abnormal or emerging infectious diseases timely, and provide evidence for bacterial infectious diseases, especially for the foodborne disease (bacterial food poisoning). In addition, PulseNet plays an important role in the biological terror.
During the meeting, the representatives of United States, Canada from China, Japan, New Zealand, India, Vietnam and the specially invited representatives, Ke Changwen, director of micro inspection institute in Guangdong CDC and Hu Qinghua, chief technician of microbial laboratory in Shenzhen CDC were made some reports. They described the effects of disease surveillance data and molecular tying technology in their counties in terms of investigation of outbreaks, and introduced the new technical development, especially the whole genome sequencing techniques in investigation of outbreaks of infectious diseases and the application prospect.
 After 2-day meeting and discussing, participants reached a consensus on the following principles. First of all, "One World, One Health" is the spirit of PulseNet, PulseNet should be one of working contents of WHO to become an important technical support of coping with the new and reemerging infectious diseases. Second monitoring of infectious disease is the obligation for each member country to share the monitoring data timely, and ensure food safety and human health. Third, develop the global and new standardized molecular typing methods cooperating with each member country for outbreak. Last but not the least, training of laboratory personnel and controlling the laboratory quality can ensure the accuracy and reliability of the molecular typing monitoring data.
